Week 2 Update

Good afternoon,

What a day?! How nice is the sunshine...I have actually gone full adult and put washing on the line...yay!

I hope everyone enjoyed the start back to sport this weekend...hopefully your team didn't start off with a bye.

SWFL Update - A tough day out in Collie yesterday for our senior teams...the women had an early start to the day to facilitate Collie's Ladies Day but we weren't able to bring home the points this time.

The Colts had a great game and managed the win in a spirited game before our very own Mark Delane suited up for the second week in a row alongside our other son Nathan 'Gilly' Gillespie...who singlehandedly held the back line together in a tough game of 16 V 16...Votes from me Gilly!

Despite their low numbers they went on a spree booting 106 points (16.10) to 22 (3.4) from Collie in according to the Pres what was a "good percentage booster". He also kicked his second goal in two weeks but dished off at least 6 that I saw!

Our League boys worked hard but a big loss due to the injury suffered by Cal meant that Collie rolled over the boys in the second half...a long bus trip home that one!

We are looking forward to hosting Carey Park at home this Sunday and we are coming to the end of a great season so get on down if you can...please come say hi!

Our Character Strength of the Week...

One that you may have noticed in my tongue in cheek report above is Humour...this is Mr D's top strength which many of you may have already noticed!

WHAT IS HUMOUR?

Humour means to recognize what is amusing in situations, and to offer the lighter side to others.

It is an important lubricant to social interactions, and can contribute to team building or moving toward group goals.

Where other strengths are more or less essential for achieving certain types of goals or dealing with certain types of problems, humour is rarely an essential component to positive social interactions, but it is often a desirable one.

Humour involves the ability to make other people smile or laugh. It also means having a composed and cheerful view on adversity that allows an individual to see its light side and thereby sustain a good mood.

What's Coming Up...?

Mission Markets - We will once again be celebrating the Feast Day of Mary our Patron with a whole school mass and day of activities celebrating her.

We will then participating in our annual Mission Markets on Friday 4th August

Ben and I are in the process of finalising our stall idea and we will communicate that to you as soon as possible.

We are thinking of doing a hoop toss stall to raise money and our prizes will be OLC dollars...these dollars are put towards a whole class reward for the class that raises the most OLC Dollars!

Our goal with our Mission Markets is to raise money for others that are more in need than we are...it is aimed at being a day to participate and give to others, not focus on what I have and what I can take home.

We will be discussing this with the students in the coming days and we appreciate your support.

BRLA - This week we will be completing practice Bishops Religious Literacy Assessments in class.

The students will complete the actual BRLA on Wednesday 2nd August...this is nothing to be nervous about and just one of those things that we need to do...we will keep it all low key and stress free.

What is the BRLA? - This is a large-scale, standardized assessment that consists of a series of Religious Education (RE) tests developed and marked by the Office of Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA).

The purpose of the BRLA is to measure student learning of the content in the RE curriculum. Formal school and student reports are produced by the Office and will become available to schools in Term 4.

The BRLA provides a ‘point in time’ snapshot of student performance in Religious Education (RE). Students’ knowledge and understanding of the content of the RE curriculum is assessed using a combination of multiple choice, and short and extended response items.

Students’ faith is not assessed. The use of the BRLA complements the school based assessment programs in RE.

Changes to Dates -  Please update your diaries as needed.

  • OLC's Got Talent: Friday Week 8. 11.00-1.00pm
  • Book Week Dress Up Day: Friday Week 10.
Homework...Week 2...

Homework Scrapbook - Just to follow up on the scrapbook situation needed for our new books this Semester...

In our book list at the beginning of the year we had double the books we needed on the list so that we could swap over for second semester our Maths, Reading, Writing, Spelling and Homework...the first 4 are exercise books with Homework being a scrap book.

We had enough books on the list but then made a last minute decision to change our Religion exercise to a scrap book which is why many of you are one short. Our apologies....

We have swapped over all our other books but we need this one sorted as soon as possible.

If you can please make sure that your child brings in with them tomorrow ONE scrapbook...the day will be awesome! If you have already sorted this for your child, thank you!

Homework Change - This term some mental maths for our homework this semester...for some students it is VERY difficult and for some students it is VERY easy...for those that find it particularly easy, they are able to access their Mathletics tasks online.

Mathletics has tasks that are in line with what we are covering in class at the moment and has extension and revision elements included for where your child is at. Please set a family limit on the time spent as this is online.

If your child 'runs' out of tasks...have them let me know and I can set some more. I discourage the playing of Live Mathletics in lieu of completing tasks but I  will leave this with you.

Please make sure that unless your child has bought "NO HOMEWORK FOR THE WEEK!" (Yes, this is an actual thing) that they are expected to complete the following and bring it in each Friday morning:
  • Mental Maths - x 4 columns completed over the week as suits you best.
  • Reading - 10-15 minutes each night with at least 2 nights having some part of your child reading out loud to you.
  • Comprehension Questions - your child is to choose one question each night and write an appropriate response to the chosen question.
Your child is to make sure that you have signed their reading. Maths will be marked in class on a Friday morning with Mrs Lamotte.

Thank you all for a great start back to the term, I look forward to seeing you at school when we can!

Mrs Delane
