Week 7 Is Here

Good morning parents,

I hope that you have managed to stay dry and warm this weekend...the Shark Park yesterday was like an aquarium and my toes have only just thawed out!

A busy one last week rolls into another great week in 3DEL with lots that has happened and lots still to come!

A reminder about the Mundy Game next Sunday...the Sharks are taking on Eaton and we are looking for a strong showing across all senior teams!

It will be a great day with our marquee man coming down to play for our League side...

All club members would have received an email from the Pres last week asking for some help to make this day great...if you can spare just an hour, it would make a massive difference to many!

Even half an hour at some point means a lot...it has been a big start to the season and all help is appreciated!

If you are planning on coming to watch, please think about walking or riding as the parking will be limited...hopefully the teams can bring home a win!

Character Strength of the Week...

LOVE OF LEARNING?

Love of learning means a passion for learning, a desire to learn just for learning’s sake.

In fact, curiosity and love of learning are among the most closely related strengths.

While curiosity is the motivating force that leads you to seek out new information, love of learning refers to the desire to hold on to and deepen that information.

The curious person is motivated by the pursuit of knowledge; the person who loves learning is motivated by the expansion of their fund of knowledge.

Where curiosity is often associated with a great deal of energy and a drive to gather information, the lover of learning is often more contemplative.

Love of learning describes the way in which a person engages new information and skills.

Love of learning is a strength that teachers would like to see in their students, and it has important motivational consequences because it helps people persist through challenges, setbacks and negative feedback.

First Reconciliation - It was so wonderful to watch our Reconciliation candidates receive their First Reconciliation last week...the students were so respectful and thoughtfully engaged in the process.

I am so proud of all of you!

We will be coming together as a whole Year 3 group, this Saturday 10th June for a celebratory mass beginning at 6pm at OLOTSC...I can assure you that this time there will be pizza!

All Year 3 families are warmly invited to attend!

Celebration! - On Friday 9th June, the students will celebrating their classmates with a cupcake morning tea. A big thank you to those parents that have volunteered to make these...if you bring them in with your child on Friday morning we would be most grateful!

What's On...

Year 3 Excursion - We are so excited to let you know that we will be heading to Ngilgi Cave tomorrow, Tuesday 6th June for our Cultural Excursion with Josh Whiteland.

We will be leaving OLC at 11.45am ready for our excursion to begin at 12pm and we will return to school ready for a 3pm end of day.

Students are asked to:

  • Wear their sports uniform - please throw in a wet weather jacket if you have one!
  • We will get to check out Josh's new meeting place and it is undercover but we will be moving from the bus to the cave etc. so it will come in handy! It is also just looking like it will be cold as well!
  • Recess - this will be as normal at school but please pack lunch - we will NOT BE back in time for canteen.
  • Have their hat and water bottle.
I appreciate the parents that have reached out offering their assistance, it is super kind of you. As we are already a large group of students and staff, parent helpers are not required for this activity.

Upcoming HASS Assignment - Parent Help Needed - In our HASS lesson on Wednesday, we will be continuing our conversation about how communities change over time...we have shared with students some images of some of the small changes that have occurred in Dunsborough and Busselton.

We will be asking students to think of a place locally - Dunsborough, Busselton, Yallingup, Coles shopping Centre, Dunsborough Bakery, Andy's Store, Caves House etc.

They will then need to, with your help, go and take a photo of that place and then find an image of what it used to look like at least 5 years ago...it can be as old as you like but needs to show change.

Students will need these photos printed (if possible) to bring into class the next week as they will be using them to make observations on how the place has changed.

If you are unable to print these photos, please email them to me and I can print them...make sure they are in a JPG format...photos sent straight from iPhones in a .heic format don't seem to like being printed!

Reading Assessments - On Thursday I spent the day conducting reading assessments with most students, these assessments have been uploaded to See Saw for you to check out. It is so great to see many students making great progress in their reading, making it an enjoyable way to spend my day!

One of the main elements that many students need to work on is their retell and comprehension...these are skills that go along with great fluency, accuracy and expression and will continue to build.

A great way to help your child with these skills is to ask simple questions of them as they are reading to you...make sure that you are pitching these at a level that includes literal questions...ones that can be answered by looking for clues in the text and inferential questions...ones that aren't easily found, they need to look between the lines for clues.

If your child is working hard on their reading and it is taking time to develop these skills, please don't despair.

For some students the mechanics of reading the words is so heavy that they are only focused on this...keep the questions simple and acknowledge their effort!

I will be finalising these assessments with the remaining students on Thursday, so please don't be alarmed if you look and see that your child doesn't have one yet.

These will be completed for all students by Thursday.

Important Dates...

13th June - Wheels After Meals - get those skateboards and scooters out! Make sure that your child is bring their safety gear too.

15th June - Cross-Country - Students will compete in this great event, more information to come.

16th June - OLC Dance Concert - Please see the previous post and email from Mrs Haines about costumes and requirements.

Wishing you all a good week, I look forward to seeing the students in class tomorrow!
