Week 7 Update
Good afternoon parents,
I hope you have all enjoyed a great weekend!
I spent most of yesterday down at The Shark Park watching and supporting our Sharks in action against Eaton...whilst it was only the Colts that got the points yesterday in our first inter-club scratchie there was some darn good football played!
Our own 3DEL legend and last year's captain, Candice Honeybone gave the Eaton girls a darn good nudge which was so good to see...not only have we had our numbers boosted, we showed excellent improvement and we actually scored on multiple occasions as well as getting it and keeping it in our forward half...these were things to only dream of last year so yaaaaay!
We were ably assisted by none other than the great Eugene Lee in helping to keep our players hydrated, on such a hot day we couldn't have done it without him! One of the many things I love about living in our town!! We also had good numbers supporting from the shade of the bar...I mean verandah which was great to see too!
This week we are introducing a new idea to our school, we will be having a CARE Week!
We will have one of these each term and the aim is to lighten the load for students and teachers...the start of this is no homework for this week to give students, mums and dads the week off.
As a staff, we are under strict instructions to try to work a little less...we won't be having a staff meeting this week and are asked to try and leave a little earlier than we normally would!
This is a great initiative aimed at supporting the wellbeing of staff and students.
Character Strength of the Week...
Our character strength for this week is Forgiveness...a tricky one at times to genuinely lean into when we have hurt feelings but such a powerful one to embrace...this is what I tell myself when Mark says he forgot to add chocolate to the shopping list!
St Lawrence gave away everything from his church to those in need.
When he was questioned about this, he was tortured and sentenced to the death. Even as he was in pain and dying, he was telling jokes and forgiving those that did him harm.
A couple of great questions to ask:
- Do you give people a second chance?
- Do you move on when others apologise?
A few reminders for the week...
Uniform - Just a quick reminder to please make sure that your child is wearing their correct uniform.
Last week we had a number of students wearing sports uniforms on the incorrect days. We are lucky enough to wear it three times this semester - Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Your support in this is appreciated!
Project Compassion - We have our new boxes in class ready to go, it would be wonderful to see the students making a donation to this great initiative...I know Scott Pape (The Barefoot Investor) is a big advocate for jam jars...one of which is to give! If your child has any spare coins this is a great place to put them.
NAPLAN - We will begin our NAPLAN Assessments on Wednesday with our first session being Writing.
We had a practice on Thursday and I know that many students experienced some really big feelings around this...it was hard!
This is a great opportunity for learning...NAPLAN is one assessment on one day.
It doesn't tell us anything about what a great friend your child may be, or that they make great cupcakes or have beautiful manners and are kind to all.
What it does do is provide a snapshot of their understanding about a given topic in a particular setting.
My aim is always to support the students through these assessments in a calm and relaxed way.
In the coming days, if I can ask your support in reassuring your child and reiterating that they can do hard things even whilst experiencing big feels, discuss strategies they might call on when they have these feelings and remind them of the importance of trying their best.
There are some great videos and resources that you can find about breathing exercises and meditations...perfect for bedtime!
I am a huge fan of the Lion Breath...breathe in all the way to the top of your lungs and then breathe out as if you are fogging up a mirror with a deep throat growl...doing this a few times can help to reset the parasympathetic nervous system and bring a feeling of calm to the body.
We will aim to begin our NAPLAN assessments first thing in the morning (around 9.15am or so) to be underway and our schedule will be as follows:
- Wednesday - Writing
- Thursday - Reading (online)
- Friday - Spelling & Language Conventions (Online)
- Monday (Wk 8) - Maths (Online)
